Description

Adam Young will be joined by hospital chaplain Joon Park to explore the vital role of sorrow and grief in the human experience. Drawing on the work of Francis Weller and his book The Wild Edge of Sorrow, the conference reframes grief not as a problem to be fixed but as a necessary, life-affirming response to loss and disappointment. We examine how modern culture shames and silences our sorrows, often leaving them exiled in the basement of our hearts, and how this suppression leads to isolation and disconnection. Participants are invited to consider four essential conditions for healing: honoring sorrow as serious, approaching it with compassion rather than contempt, finding a trustworthy village of witnesses, and engaging the body through ritual. We will also examine common myths about grief and go into depth about how to "be with" the grieving—including what to say and what not to say.

Learning Objectives

Participants will learn:

  • What grief is and how to respond to our sorrow in a way that brings healing
  • Common myths about grief
  • The history of grief (colonialism and the suppression of grief)
  • How to "be with" the grieving
  • What to say and what not to say to those who are grieving
  • Why we tend to offer platitudes to the grieving
